UCONN School of Pharmacy’s Marie Smith Talks Pharmacist Value in Primary Care Teams on Quality Corner Show

UCONN School of Pharmacy’s Marie Smith, PharmD, FNAP, Henry A. Palmer Professor – Pharmacy Practice and Asst. Dean — Practice and Public Policy Partnerships, explains the value of including pharmacists into primary care teams for clinical services on the PQS Quality Corner Show. Podcast Host Nick Dorich asks Smith to talk about her Health Affairs publication from a November 2024, “Building The Primary Care Workforce With Pharmacist Clinical Services.”

Smith states that by integrating pharmacists into primary care teams, physicians can delegate tasks like medication management and monitoring freeing up their time for more complex cases. Pharmacists’ services can range from medication reconciliation and therapy management to monitoring chronic diseases and adjusting medications. She also explains that scope of these services varies by state, and highlights that consistent and adequate reimbursement for pharmacist services remains a significant challenge.
